Description
Dear friends,
Please join us virtually (or with us if in Iqaluit!) for the Nov 3 premiere of ᐃᓐᓇᖅᐳᑦ ᐱᒻᒪᕆᐊᓘᒋᔭᕗᑦ: ᐃᓄᖕᓄᑦ ᐳᕙᓪᓗᒋᐊᕐᕕᕕᓂᕐᒧᑦ ᒪᒥᓴᕐᓂᐅᓪᓗᓂ ᐊᐅᓪᓚᖅᓯᒪᓂᕆᓚᐅᖅᑕᖓᑦ Our Elders Are So Important to Us: A Tuberculosis Sanatorium Healing Journey, a film by Taqqut Productions with SeeChange Initiative, in Inuktitut with English subtitles.
About: From the 1940s to the 1960s, about half of Eastern Arctic Inuit in Canada were sent south for TB treatment without consent and separated from their families, some for years. This 29-minute documentary follows the 2025 Intergenerational Healing Journey, which brought survivors and youth from Nunavut back to the former Mountain Sanatorium site in Hamilton, Ontario, for closure and sharing stories across generations. Elders and youth speak about this history, how it shapes families today, and what healing means to them.
Despite efforts to eliminate TB, it remains a crisis in Inuit Nunangat, and an interim 2025 target to halve rates was not met.
We’re bringing together Elders, youth, families, friends, and community organizations for an evening of learning, reflection, and connection.

Before you watch
- The film includes difficult memories of the sanatorium years. If you need to talk to someone, call the Kamatsiaqtut Helpline (24/7) at 1-800-265-3333.
- TB is preventable, treatable, and curable, and most people are now tested and treated in their own community.
