Bringing Healing and Closure to Tuberculosis Sanatorium Survivors

Summary

See the report here.

A group of Inuit Elders who endured years of isolation and psychological abuse in Southern tuberculosis sanatoriums in the 1950s and 60s visited Hamilton, where about 1,200 Inuit were treated for TB, from July 23 to 26, 2023.

The visit, the first of its kind in Canada, was organized by SeeChange Initiative and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. at the request of survivors. The nine Elders from different communities in Nunavut were accompanied by four Inuit youth, as well as counsellors, translators and family members.
