Summary

Background

The trip had several interrelated objectives: to support TB sanatorium survivors in their journey towards healing and closure; to hold space for Elders to share their stories in their own words with Inuit youth to foster intergenerational healing; to deepen understanding of the history of TB in Nunavut and to raise awareness of the current TB crisis Inuit face; to engage meaningfully with youth; to document the visit and the survivors’ testimonies; and to strengthen partnerships in Hamilton to support steps towards reconciliation.

Building on the success of the first Inuit Intergenerational Healing Journey in July 2023, SeeChange organized a second visit of Inuit TB sanatorium survivors and youths to Hamilton, Ontario, where more than 1,272 Inuit were treated for TB in the former Mountain Sanatorium between 1955 and 1963.
