Bio Sketch
Prof. Madhukar Pai, MD, PhD, FRSC, FCAHS is a Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and Global Health. He did his medical training and community medicine residency in Vellore, India. He completed his PhD in epidemiology at UC Berkeley, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the UCSF.
Madhu’s research uses translational epidemiology and implementation science to enhance TB care and control, so that products, knowledge and policies can translate into saved lives, and ultimately population level impact, especially in high-burden countries. He has over 650 publications and has given over 200 invited lectures. He is a recipient of the Chanchlani Global Health Research Award, McGill University’s President’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching and Haile T. Debas Prize.
Madhu serves on the WHO STAG-TB Southeast Asia, the WHO Advisory group on Tuberculosis Diagnostics, and on the Expert Group on Tuberculosis Prevention and Control of the Global Coalition Against Tuberculosis (GCAT) among others. He has been a Commissioner on two Lancet Commissions (on TB and Diagnostics), and has contributed to 26 global policies/standards. He is on many editorial boards, including Lancet Infectious Diseases and PLoS Medicine, and is the Editor-In-Chief of PLoS Global Public Health.
As the Inaugural Chair of the Department of Global and Public Health at McGill University, he provides leadership to produce action-oriented research to inform policy and programming aimed at improving public health locally, nationally, and globally. Through his academic publications, his media engagement and his contributions to WHO as an expert, he has helped prioritize equity in global health policy agendas.
